According to the 57th Battalion unit diary, on the 24 March 1917 they were taking over the outpost line at Beaumetz crossroads, when they were attacked and shelled and had to fall back. They later recaptured the positions for the loss of two officers wounded and eight other ranks killed and 25 wounded, including L Sgt Palmer.
