Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
75 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 15th December 1949, Private Hugh Joseph Sherry, 4th Battalion (Reg No-7058), blacksmith's striker and lift driver from Cumberland Street, Teralba, New South Wales and William Street, Teralba, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. CATHOLIC 2-59. 110. Not married.
Born at Glasgow, Scotland about September 1887 to Bartholomew and Mary Sherry of 1 Milton Street, Glasgow, Scotland, Hugh enlisted on the 25th October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 11th November 1916.
Wounded in action - 21.9.1917 (GSW left hand), 6.7.1918 (SW back, slight), 14.8.1918 (GSW right leg or knee, fractured femur, severe, required amputation).
Granted leave to England from 3.3.1918 to 30.3.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 6.5.1919.
Hugh arrived home invalided on the 28th June 1919, and was still in hospital undergoing treatment, 30th October 1920. Discharged 24th April 1921.
Mr. Sherry’s name has been inscribed on the Teralba Soldiers' Memorial and the Sulphide Corporation Pty Ltd Cockle Creek Works Roll of Honour.
The tragic circumstances of Hugh’s death were reported to have died in a lift from a medical condition.
I have placed poppies at Hugh’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge 14/12/1949.
