Rol was the eldest of five children of Francis (Frank) Hethersett Huntinton (born 1861 in Sydney, NSW) and Edith Amy Barr (born 1867 in Brisbane, QLD). Frank - a Public Servant with the Education Department - and Edith married in 1892 in Brisbane, where they raised their family.
Ric was working as an Engineer's Surveyor in Brisbane when he enlisted in the AIF in October 1916. He served with 4th and 1st Pioneer Battalions as a Private, Sapper, Corporal and Sergeant (Service No:5791) and was Discharged in December 1919. Younger brother Francis (Ric) served with the 42nd infantry Battalion (Sergeant, Service No:2567) and was KiA in July 1917.
Returning to Brisbane QLD, Ric was working as a Surveyor in 1921 when he married Effie White Crawford (born 1899 in Brisbane, QLD). Ric and Effie moved to Sydney, where Ric worked as a Surveyor. When Ric took employment as a Civil Engineer in the mid 1930's, the family moved to Merriwa and then Mittagong in NSW before returning to QLD in 1950, where Ric was a Civil Engineer. He died in 1952 and Effie died in 1983.
