Biography contributed by Cowell Area School

Thomas spent his early life in Cowell, attending school and working in and around the Franklin Harbour district as a labourer.

Private Bagnell trained at Exhibition Camp until embarkation on HMAT Miltiades on 7/2/1916. He arrived at Suez 11/3/1916 for training then for action on 8/4/1916 to Duntroon Plateau (an Australian military post in the Sinai).  Private Bagnell departed from there with the British Expedition Forces to Alexandria then Marseilles.  He was killed in action in the field on 29/10/1916.  Private Bagnell has no known grave and is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, in France.

The late Pte Thomas Bagnell (EP Tribune Fri 24 Nov 1916)

It is with the deepest regret that we have to chronicle the death of another of Franklin Harbour's brave soldiers, the news being received yesterday by the Rev. W. A. Swan, that Thomas Franklin Roy, the third son of Mr and Mrs P. Bagnell, of Cowell, had been killed in action in France on October 29th.

"Tommy," as he was popularly known, was of a very bright and cheerful disposition and well-liked by all who knew him. He followed rural life for many years until he came to reside in Cowell and entered the employ of Mr J. H. Mitchell, where he remained for some time and became extremely popular with the residents of the town. Tiring of indoor life, he again went into the country to work, where he remained until he volunteered for active service in October 1915. He visited his parents at Cowell on his long leave during the Christmas holidays last year, and left Australia on February 7th.

After a short time in Egypt, he was sent to France with his Battalion, the 32nd, and had been there several months. He went through several hard battles during the great "push" before he met his death. He was extremely popular with his comrades, and noted for his humour, whilst in camp.

The late Pte Bagnell was well-known in sporting circles in the Harbour and took the field with the Cowell football team during the two seasons prior to the abandonment of the sport owing to the war and always acquitted himself in a gentlemanly and sportsmanlike manner. He was one of the unlucky party of three that left Cowell together, viz, Pte H. Wiseman (now unfit through an attack of Meningitis), Pte L. W. Parish (prisoner of war in Germany) and himself.

The deepest sympathy is felt throughout the whole district for the parents and relatives of the brave lad.
