Biography

Alwyn Elliot Moss was one of three brothers to enlist, the other two being Samuel Graham Moss (/explore/people/355370) and Heywood Seymour Moss (/explore/people/144833http://www.rslvirtualwarmemorial.org.au/explore/people/144833). At the time of enlistment he listed his mother Mrs Elizabeth Moss as his next of kin. He listed his occupation as Station overseer.

He and Samuel enlisted within days of one another in late August 1915. Alwyn and Samuel were assigned to the same reinforcement draft of the 27th Battalion; the 8th Reinforcements. They embarked together on the HMAT Borda A 30 on the 12th January 1916. Their service careers pralleled one another throughout the remainder of the war, transferring to the 10th Battalion in the process.

Heywood, the youngest brother, joined up 18 months later and was coincidentally conveyed to war by the same ship that had carried his brothers 18 months earlier.

Alwyn Elliot is commemorated on a number of memorials indicative of the geographic range that his job as a station oversser had taken him. He was a Member of the RSL from 1 September 1919 until his death on the 5th September 1966 aged 70 years (Badge number S368). He had been a Life Member at the Tumby Bay sub-branch but was living in Adelaide at 5 Aroha Terrace Black Forest at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife Doris.
