Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Private John Lafferty, known as Jack, of 16 Battalion was born in Glasgow to John and Catherine Lafferty in 1883. Jack had two brothers and sister, plus two step-brothers (James and Hugh) from his father's first wife Fanny who died.

The family decided to emigrate from Scotland to Australia arriving in Melbourne on the SS Cuzco in May 1885, when John was only 2 years of age. Later they moved to Western Australia and lived in George Street Fremantle. Jack worked as a pipe moulder.

Jack enlisted in June 1915 and was posted to the 16th Battalion. He was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 30 August 1916. He was 33.

His half-brother, 316 Pte. James David Lafferty 11th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action at Gallipoli, 1 August 1915, aged 43.
