Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Charles Chopping was living at Jarnadup in Western Australia when he enlisted, and the town is now known as Jardee. It was a rail siding and he was employed as an engine driver. He was the son of Isaac Hooper Chopping and Lucy Chopping, of Woodbridge, Tasmania. Enlisting in 1914 he was one of the very first Australians to join the colours. Charles landed with the 11th Battalion on the very first day of the Anzac Landing, and he died during the Turkish attacks of 19 May 1915.

His youngest brother, 2228 Pte. Reginald Eric Chopping 12th Battalion AIF, enlisted in Tasmania when he still 16 years of age in 1915. He died of meningitis not long after arriving in Egypt, at the age of 17.
