Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

George Asher Landen was one of the only two sons of Harry and Ellen Landen, of Prahan, Victoria. Both of the sons lost their lives during WW1. George married Ethel May Beck during August 1915, only a month before he embarked for overseas.

George’s older brother, 761 Lce. Cpl. Harry Landen 23rd Battalion AIF had died of pneumonia on Malta after being evacuated from Gallipoli on 7 October 1915, aged 26.

George enlisted with the 7th Battalion during July 1915 and transferred to the 5th Division Artillery when in Egypt during March 1916. He later transferred to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade and was killed in action in Ypres on the 26 September 1917. He was reported to have been in a gun pit when a high explosive shell burst near his position, killing him and another man instantly.

George left a will in favour of his new wife, May, and she was also granted a pension of two pounds per fortnight.
