216 Gunner John Garth, of the 55th Siege Artillery Battery enlisted at the same time as his younger brother Frank, at age 20, and was wounded in action very shortly after arriving in France, during March 1916, one of the very first Australians wounded in action on the Western Front. He suffered multiple shrapnel wounds to his head, left wrist and back and was evacuated to Australia 31 August 1916. The 55th Siege Battery was one of the first Australian units in action in France, and it billets were shelled on the 15th March 1916, killing two men and wounding 10 others. John Garth died in 1929, still only 34 years of age, and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery, Perth, Western Australia.
