Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
53 years ago today, on the 24th November 1971, Private John Kenneth Ross, referred to as Jack, 26th Battalion (Reg No-4196), hairdresser from Wollumbin Street, Murwillumbah, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 77. CATHOLIC 3-100. 122.
Born at Murwillumbah, New South Wales on the 4th February 1894 to Donald and K(C)atherine (Kate) Ross; husband of Agnes Dorothy Ross, married?, died 4.2.1986, age 87, sleeping here), Jack enlisted on the 23rd September 1915 at Brisbane, Queensland.
Unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth on the 28th March 1916.
Admitted to hospital 13.5.1916 (influenza), 10.11.1916 (bronchitis & rheumatism).
Commenced return to Australia 17.3.1917.
Jack arrived home on the 16th May 1917, being discharged on the 12th July 1917.
Mr. Ross’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Murwillumbah War Memorial.
I have placed poppies at Jack’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
