Enlisted in January 1915 as the 27th Battalion was being raised, aged 17. He embarked with the Battalion on HMAT Geelong at Outer Harbour on the 31st May 1915. After undertaking training in Egypt he landed at ANZAC in September 1915 and served there until December 1915 when he was hospitalised.
Harold served with the 27th Battalion throughout the war. His conduct record suggests he was probably a rather willful young man, with numerous charges and summary punishments such as 'Field Punishment' and forfeiture of pay along the way.
