Albert was the son of Charles and Helen Schirmer [nee Higgs]. Albert left
Adelaide on HMAT A29 Suevic on 31 May 1916 and was sent to France from
Southampton on 27 November. He served there for the duration of the war,
being mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s despatch of 16 March 1919. Albert
returned to Australia on the Orita on 1 July 1919 and was discharged on 21
September.
