Awarded the Military Medal for his actions at Hermies on 9 April 1917, when having lost his section commander due to wounds, he pushed forward and took command of a small party and led them against a section of enemy trench. He succeeded and took many German prisoners. He showed conspicuous coolness and initiative, enabling valuable services to be rendered.
