Son of Edward Upward and Lucy Upward of  Keiraville, NSW.

30 July 1915 - enlisted at Paddington, NSW, with the 4th Battalion

13 February 1916 - transferred to the 56th Battalion

26 September 1917 - wound in action. Transferred to England on 28 September 1917 with wounds to  both legs. 

13 April 1919 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Wyreema disembarking on 3 June 1919

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

8 August 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District as medically unfit

During 1920c William married Hilda Richardson in Sydney, NSW
