Biography contributed by Sharyn Roberts

SECOND-LIEUTENANT H. H. WALKER, ONE OF THE WEST AUSTRALIANS
WOUNDED WHILE FIGHTING AT THE DARDANELLES.
Lieut. H. H. Walker, only son of Mr. H. E. Walker, of Kensington street, East Perth, has the honour of being the first to receive a commission out of the ranks in The Australian Imperial Forces. At the outbreak of the war, he held the rank of Colour-Sergeant iN the 88th Perth lnfantry and promptly volunteered as a private. Having had such a thorough military training, it was not very long before his capabilities were rocognised, and after passing through every step of the non-commissioned ranks, he was finally made a second lieutenant and is now attached to "D" Company, 11th Battalion.

In 1917 Lieut. Walker was charged with fiddling his paybook to gain £5. While under open arrest he scarpered, and when again taken into custody was convicted and dismissed from the service. He was therefore, excluded from the award of service medals, which seems a very high price to pay - considering he was an officer shot at the landing at Gallipoli, and he returned to the front after convalescing in Australia, to give further service up until the time the charges were brought.
