Thomas McCartney was born in Mile End, Adelaide, South Australia. He was born on December, 1896. The exact date is unknown.
He had two brothers, Harry McCartney and James McCartney, both of whom also joined the army. Harry returned back to Australia on the 22nd of Febuary, 1917. James was unfortunately killed in action, 10th of April, 1917. Thomas also had a father, Hugh McCartney. Information about his mother is unknown.
McCartney was single when he joined the army. Prior to enlisting, he worked as a blacksmith. He was religious and joined the Church of England. Thomas was 19 and 2 months on the date of the enlistment.
Thomas earned two medals after his service, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was apart of the 43rd Infantry Battalion, involved with fighting on the Western front from late 1916-1918. The 43rd Infantry Battalion was an all-volunteer battalion of the Australian Imperial Force. McCartney was a Lance Corporal, taking care of his unit and took full responsibility for his team's actions. He was discharged on the Febuary of 1918, reasons unknown.
