He was 30 and the son of Robert and Elizabeth Stuart McPherson Grey, of Sherwood Creek, Halfway Creek, South Grafton, New South Wales.

Died on this date – 2nd March …… Robert Hugh Grey was born on 31st October, 1886 at Glenmurray, Berry near Kangaroo Valley, NSW to parents Robert G. & Elizabeth Stuart McPherson Grey (nee Carter). 

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 18th August, 1916 as a 29 year old, single, Farmer (Dairy & Agricultural) from Sherwood Creek, South Grafton, NSW.

Private Robert Hugh Grey, Service number 4364, embarked from Sydney on SS Port Napier on 17th November, 1916 with the 8th Infantry Brigade, 30th Infantry Battalion, 11th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 29th January, 1917.  Private Grey had been admitted to the Ship’s Hospital twice on the voyage over to England. He was admitted from 25th November – 6th December, 1916 with Measles & again from 21st – 23rd December, 1916 with Fevers & Cold.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He was admitted to Military Hospital, Fovant, Wiltshire on 15th February, 1917, seriously ill with Influenza, from “C” Company, 8th Training Battalion, Hurdcott, Wiltshire.

Private Robert Hugh Grey died at 10 p.m. on 2nd March, 1917 at Military Hospital, Fovant, Wiltshire from Broncho-Pneumonia. The Hospital Admissions form has the following remarks: “This patient was admitted into Hospital on 15.2.17 seriously ill with Influenza. Bronchitis developed & gradually Broncho pneumonia supervened. The patient died from Cardiac failure on 2.3.17.”

He was buried in St Edith’s Churchyard, Baverstock, Wiltshire, England where 28 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
