Son of William Matthew Oliver and Kathleen (nee O'Brien) Oliver of 7 O'Halloran Street, Adelaide, SA; brother of Albert James Montague Oliver and John Percy Oliver who returned to Australia on 21 July 1917  having served with the 27th Battalion.

Both parents signed note giving consent for him to enlist in the AIF
