Add my storyBiography contributed by Paul Lemar
Edmund FLAHERTY was born in Greenwich, Kent UK on 23.04.1891 to John and Annie FLAHERTY (nee COURTNEY).
Sadly, his mother passed away in 1895 when he was 3. He apparently had four brothers and two sisters.
John FLAHERTY and possibly with his family appear to have migrated to Ohio USA around 1895 after the death of his wife where they lived/worked in the Greenwich Union Workhouse, Ohio from 1901-1905 then moved to New Jersey in 1908. The family appears to have been destitute. It is possible that Edmund remained at an orphanage in the UK back in Essex, UK in 1901 with his brother Morgan and there are extensive records of him being in different orphanages and workhouses in the UK. There are a number of possibilities here that he may not have accompanied his father to the USA.
In 1911, he has departed England and sailed to Brisbane in June 1911.
He married Gustava Victoria SCHARNBERG on 23.12.1915. There were two children to the marriage.
Edmund died at Adelaide on 18.06.1942 aged 49 years. Also buried in this grave is Henrich SCHARNBERG aged 78 died 18.08.1939 (father in law) and his son Herbert FLAHERTY aged 48 died 18.08.1965.
Military
Edmund FLAHERTY is recorded as having joined the AIF on 26.04.1918 and sailed to England on 05.06.1918.
He appears to been involved in training but also served briefly in France before the armistice. He went back to France after the armistice and remained there until 11.06.1919 with the AIBD (Australian Infantry Base Depot) and discharged on 16.09.1919. He was awarded the British War Medal.
