Son of Gottlieb Robert Zerst and Emily Jane Zerbst nee Eyers of Diapur, Victoria.
Brother of King Frederick Zerbst who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 7th Battalion and is buried in the Aeroplane Cemetery, Belgium, Plot 111, Row B, Grave 8.
Commenced return to Australia on 24 January 1918 aboard HS Karoola disembarking on 10 March 1918
