"The sad news of the death of Private Charles Stockwell, which took place somewhere in France on 1st of April last, was received here with many expressions of regret. The deceased enlisted from here for active service about twelve months ago, and had not been long at the firing line when he made the supreme sacrifice, death being due to a gunshot wound. The late Private Stockwell was a fine type of our Australian manhood, being a splendid rider and an excellent bush-man, with a kind and generous disposition. His aged mother, Mrs. John Hedge, of Tiaro, and his many brothers, relatives and friends, in our township and district, received the sad news with much regret, and to his aged parent, relatives and friends, we extend our sincere sympathy." - from the Maryborough Chronicle 30 Apr 1918 (nla.gov.au)
