92 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 6th November 1931, Sergeant John Sumner, 1st Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-3370), Assistant Mine Manager (South Maitland Colliery), from Lewis Street, Maryville, New South Wales and 50 Hannell Street, Wickham, N.S.W., father of two (Pearl and Charles), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. ANGLICAN 2-115. 73.

Born at Normanton, Yorkshire, England about 1876 to John, died 30.12.1924 as SUMMER, Dudley, N.S.W., age 72, Whitebridge Cemetery, N.S.W., and Mary Sumner nee Tiffin, died 9.1.1887, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 34, METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 9 SE. 23; husband of Rachel Ann Sumner nee Tonks or Gwatkin (married 1905, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 26.1.1950, Islington, N.S.W., age 71) of 10 Anderton Street, Islington, N.S.W., John enlisted on the 6th April 1916 with the No. 4 Tunnelling Company and 1st Reinforcements at Rosebery Park, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A69 Warilda on the 22nd May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 5.12.1916 (not stated).

Transferred to England 27.11.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 31.1.1918.

John was invalided home on the 15th April 1918, being discharged medically unfit (neurasthenia, gas poisoning) on the 14th October 1918.

Mr. Sumner’s name has been inscribed on the Dudley Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton-Rose of Hamilton Lodge, G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Harry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
