Son of William John Quarrell and Louisa Marion Quarrell nee Schmidt of Sheriff Street, Stawell, Victoria. Brother of Leslis Ernest Quarrell who returned to Australia on 27 January 1919 having served with the 8th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 17 March 1919 aboard HT Plassy disembarking on 30 April 1919
