Son of Benjamin Oakley and Maria Oakley nee Hughes of Waratah, Tasmania.
Brother of William Henry Oakley who was killed in action on 25 April 1915 while serving with the 12th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Panel 35 of the Lone Pine Memorial. James William Oakley who returned to Australia on 29 June 1919 having served with the 40th Battalion
Commenced return to Australia on 8 April 1917 aboard HT Barambah disembarking on 9 June 1917 at Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart.

On 22 July 1918 Henry married Roberta Pretoria Martin in Waratah, Tasmania
