Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Frederick Norman Lyons was the son of Fredrick and Maria Elizabeth Lyons of Surry Hills, Sydney, New South Wales. He and his two brothers all enlisted in the 19th Battalion during late 1915.

Frederick had married Jane Veronica during 1912 and he was the father of a three-year-old son when he enlisted. He was a good athlete and a member of the South Sydney Harriers.

Frederick arrived in Egypt on 26 February 1916, transferred to the 55th Battalion during April 1916 and arrived in France on 29 June 1916. He fell sick less than a week later, and was admitted to the 12th Casualty Clearing Station on 5 July 1916. He was dangerously ill for several days and died in France on 11 July 1916.

His younger brother, 4306 Pte. Reginald Laurence Lyons 5th Australian Machine Gun Company died of wounds in Belgium on 4 October 1917, aged 24.

Another younger brother, 4569 Pte. Raymond Alfred Lyons 19th Battalion AIF, was returned to Australia for family reasons during 1918, after two years’ service. His mother, Maria, having lost two sons, wrote directly to General Birdwood pleading for her surviving son to be returned to Australia. Birdwood quickly obliged and Alfred Lyons left England August 1918.
