Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 20th July 1916, Private Thomas Easton, referred to as Tommy, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2026), miner from Teralba, New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the Battle of Fromelles, age 27. Cause of death not stated.
No Roll of Honour circular summited.
No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Jesmond, New South Wales on the 24th September 1888 to James (died 4.8.1937, Wallsend, N.S.W., age?) of Dunbar Street, Stockton, New South Wales and 14 St. James Road, Adamstown, N.S.W. and Margaret Street, Teralba, N.S.W., and Jane Ann Easton (died 21.4.1895, Stockton, N.S.W., age?, sleeping at Stockton Cemetery, not listed on website Stockton General Cemetery) of Dunbar Street, Stockton, New South Wales, Tommy enlisted on the 13th September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 16th February 1916.
Disembarked Marseilles, France 23.6.1916.
Mr. Easton’s name has been inscribed on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France. Memorial No 2.
Place of Association – Adamstown, New South Wales, Australia.
Tommy’s name has also been inscribed on the Teralba Soldiers'. Name not inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial.
Unfortunately, there is no headstone at the curbed gravesite for Tommy’s father James, so on the 20th July 2016 I erected a Memorial cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his son’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. PRESBYTERIAN-8NW. 73.
