Hubert was the fourth of eight children of Thomas Herbert Cross (born 1860 in Morven, Tasmania - aka Herbert) and Emma Jane Medwin (born 1866 in Forest, Tasmania). Thomas and Emma married in 1866 in Horton, Tasmania and settled in Emu Bay where they raised their family and Thomas was a Contractor. In 1912, at Rouse's Camp in Waratah, Tasmania, Thomas committed suicide by shooting himeslef with a rifle.

By 1916, tow of Hubert's older sisters had left Tasmania to work in Victoria - Annie Beatrice was a Barmaid in Richmond before her marriage, and Lillian May was 16 years of age when she commenced work as a Housemaid in the Macedon Ranges. Lillian and her husband ran Oxford Farm - a Farm and Guesthouse at Woodend in the Macedon Ranges. During the Depression years Lillian disguised herself as a male and worked as Cook in Railway Camps. She later ran the Victory Cafe at Woodend, where younger sister Vera lived with her in 1954. Myrtle, Hubert's youngest sister farmed with her husband in Kamona, Tasmania and after his death, Myrtle was a Prospector - and was lost in the bush for ten days whilst prospecting in 1952)

Hubert was a Labourer in Lottah in Portland, Tasmania when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916 - the year his brother Reuben (Service No: 2471) died of wounds in Alexandria. Hubert served as a Private (Service No: 2062)with 3rd Reinforcements 40th Infantry Battalion in France and was twice WIA.  Brother Roy also served in the AIF as a Private (Service No: 522270)
