Walter John Guppy aged 20 when he went to war. He was born in 1895 in Thebarton, a suburb of Adelaide. He was married to wife to Mr Doris Mabel Guppy. He was 5'6" and weighed 151 lbs. He had brown eyes and a fresh complexion.
Walter enlisted on 18 July 1915. He embarked for overseas service on 9 June 1916, almost a year later, and reached France in November. He was wounded in action on 2 July 1917, suffering a severe wound to his left leg. He did not properly recover from this wound and, after a long convalescence in England, returned to Australia in May 1918.
