The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.
The 52nd name inscribed is Private George Grimmond.
On the 27th May 1978, Private George Grimmond, 35th Battalion (bugler, Reg No-1138), wheeler and bandsman from Newtown, Minmi, New South Wales, died at Newcastle, N.S.W., age 83 years, 7 months, and his ashes have been interred at Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., date unknown. Location of Ashes - Drive Wall G/177.
Born at Waratah, New South Wales on the 28th October 1894 to John Daniel Revel or Revie Snr, died 6.4.1942, Wyong, N.S.W., age 67, buried at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) N SW. 71, marked grave, from 56 Harriet Street, Waratah, N.S.W., and Catherine Elizabeth Grimmond nee Jackson, died 12.9.1951, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 73, mother of 7, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) N SW. 73, from Little Denison Street, Carrington, N.S.W. (1918) and 10 Duke Street, New Lambton, N.S.W.; husband of Eva Irene Grimmond nee Ball, married 1922, Wickham, N.S.W., died 5.10.1949, Bar Beach, N.S.W., age 50, mother of 2?
George enlisted on the 3rd January 1916, age 21 years 2 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.
Admitted to hospital 28.7.1916 (otitis media, seriously ill - an inflammation or infection of the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum).
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.
George's name mentioned on a Roll of Honour notice for Private George Thomas Jackson, 35th & 53rd Battalions, Reg No-1151A, KIA 25th October 1916, age 32 years 3 months. Younger brother of Catherine Elizabeth Grimmond nee Jackson. See my extensive reseach on our website.
Granted leave to England from 1.2.1918 to 15.2.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 11.5.1919.
George arrived home on the 28th June 1919, being discharged on the 12th August 1919.
Mr. Grimmond’s name has been inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour as GRIMMONDS.
Not officially commemorated.
I would like to see poppies placed at George’s plaque in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
