Biography contributed by Peter Rankin

He enlisted as a 15 year old, and was only 16 years old at time of death. A family epitaph for him reads,

HE'D SCARCELY LEFT HIS CHILDHOOD,

THOUGH HE GAVE HIS LIFE TO SAVE,

HE HAD NOT REACHED HIS MANHOOD,

THOUGH HE LIES IN A HERO'S GRAVE.

His older brothers served, Private Fedor Gartung. 1078. 4th Battalion, died of wounds on the 12th September 1918.
