From Gary Mitchell

101 years ago today, from the 8th to 11th August 1918, The Battle of Amiens began, the crucial Allied breakthrough counter-offensive, launched on the Western Front around Amiens, in the Somme sector. The Allies made effective use of infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft, which led to an unprecedented advance (about 12 kilometres by early afternoon of the first day) and vast numbers of German prisoners.

Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

102 years ago, from the 8th to 11th August 1918, The Battle of Amiens began, the crucial Allied breakthrough counter-offensive, launched on the Western Front around Amiens, in the Somme sector. The Allies made effective use of infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft, which led to an unprecedented advance (about 12 kilometres by early afternoon of the first day) and vast numbers of German prisoners.

Cpl Bowen was one of eight soldiers of the 1st A.I.F. who fell during this battle are memorialised, or awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

Corporal Herbert William Bowen (M.M.), 19th Battalion, labourer from First Street, Boolaroo, New South Wales, fell on the 11th August 1918, age 31.

Cpl Bowen's actions on 11th of August lead to the postumous award of a Military Medal

'During the operation on 11th August, 1918 against RAINECOURT, East of AMIENS, this N.C.O. displayed great courage and gallantry in rushing an enemy's sniper's position which was causing considerable trouble to the troops while digging in on the objective line. Accompanied by Sergeant HALL he rushed the enemy post in broad daylight but was severely wounded by a bullet from the post when only about 12 yards away. His comrade was enabled to clear the post, killing two of the enemy with a bomb and capturing the remaining three occupants of the post who were wounded.'

Date: 15 September 1919

Cpl Bowen's AWM Red Cross and Wounding file reported that Pte HS Doohan 3796 saw him as a walking wounded case with a "thick arm" at Framerville going to an aid post.  Pte Doohan reported that the shelling was very heavy, so it is assumed he was killed as a result of the shelling.  He was missing for sometime after 11/8/1918.
