Biography

"DR A. B. BROCKWAY DIES AT 81

Dr. A. B, Brockway, whose death occurred on Wednesday at the age of 81, was, until his retirement from practice in 1923, one of Brisbane's best known medical men and public-spirited citizens. Since 1923 he had lived at Margate. Born in South Africa and trained in London, he came to Australia and served as resident surgeon at the Muttaburra Hospital before he started practice at Southport. He then transferred to Wlckham Terrace, where he lived until his retirement. Dr Brockway was keenly interested in amateur athletic pastimes, and was donor of the Brockway Cup for competition in the secondary schools. He was for some time president of the Queensland branch of the British Medical Association. He also was president of the Shakespearean Society, the Brisbane School ot Arts, and the British Empire Association. He was one of the founders of the Royal Queensland Automobile Club, of which he was the first honorary secretary. He was for many years connected with the naval services, and had charge of No. 2 Australian hospital ship for three years (1915-18) during last war.

Under the pen-name of Archibald Birt he wrote two novels, "Castle Cvargas" and "The Locust and the Ladybird," and a number of short stories and verse. He is survived by his second wife and two daughters of his first marriage — Mrs O. P. Hill, of Barcaldine, and Miss Dorothy Brockway, of Wickham Terrace." - from the Brisbane Telegraph 15 Oct 1943 (nla.gov.au)
