Driver John Henry Austin (Service No:8730) enlisted in the AIF on 15 September 1915 as a Gunner attached to 2nd Divisional Ammunition Column. Gunner Austin embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT 39 Port Melbourne on 16 November 1915 and on 10 March 1916 was transferrd to 22nd Howitzer Brigade (4th Artillery Brigade). Gunner Austin was WiA (gassed) in France on 25 October 1917 and embarked for the RTA on board Balmoral Castle. Driver Austin was Discharged on 21 June 1919.
Born in 1886 at Pattersonia in Launceston Tasmania, Jack was the fourth of seven children of George Austin (b1846 in Campbell Town, Tasmania) and second wife Elizabeth Ann Kettle (b1863 in Launceston, Tasmania). George (a Labourer) and Elizabeth married in 1882 in Launceston, Tasmania. George and Elizabeth settled at Turner's Marsh in Lilydale where George was a Farmer.
Jack worked as a Labourer and on his death, local newspapers reported 'Mr Austin served during the Great War with the 10th Howitzer Battery, and was badly gassed in France. He had not neen in good health for a considerable time (Trove; 1933).
