Benjamin was the son of Brian and Elizabeth Phelps [nee Mountstephens].
Having left Adelaide with his unit on board the A19 Afric on 9 June 1916,
Benjamin, shortly after arriving in Liverpool was hospitalised with malaria on
26 August. His unit was sent to France on 25 November. He was wounded in
action on 21 April 1917, sustaining shrapnel wounds to the right forearm,
hand and the loss of the fourth finger of the right hand. Army Base Records in
Melbourne notified Benjamin’s mother of his injuries on 4 May. He was
initially treated at a Casualty Clearing Station in France, prior to being
transferred to England for further treatment at Ontario Military Hospital at
Harefield. Due to the extent of his wounds Benjamin was categorised as
medically unfit and returned to Australia on H.S. Euripides on 21 July where he
was discharged on 23 October. Benjamin was granted a pension of three
pounds per fortnight from 24 October.
