OBITUARY - MR GARNET MASSEY

Mr. Garnet Massey, principal of the firm of Massey and Sons Pty Ltd, master builders, of Park St, South Melbourne, died suddenly on Saturday at his home, in Talbot Cres, Kooyong. Mr. Massey, who was a prominent member of the Master Builders Association, was a son of the late Mr. William Massey, founder of the firm, and was best known for his successful rebuilding of Melbourne Town Hall after it had been severely damaged by fire in February, 1925. Its reconstruction presented great engineering difficulties. Mr. Massey erected many import ant buildings in Melbourne. Work for the Tramways Board included the Preston workshops and South Melbourne car sheds, and he also built the Moonee Valley grandstand. Other buildings included the Carmelite Monastery, Kew; Nazareth House, Camberwell; St John's Church, East Melbourne; and the church of Joan of Arc at Brighton.

He served in the 1914-18 War as a member of the 51st Battalion, enlisting in Western Australia. He was a member of the Emerald Country Club, and for many years during his residence in Emerald represented the district on Ferntree Gully Shire Council.

Mr. Massey was 54. He leaves a widow and four daughters.

The funeral will leave Austral Funeral Services parlours, Hoddle st, Abbotsford, at11am today, arriving at the Springvale Crematorium at 12 noon.
