Son of John Hawes and Martha Hawes of Elderslie, Tasmania. On 16 October 1916 John signed the consent form but added that Herbert was not to go overseas until he was of age
Commenced return to Australia on 27 May 1919 aboard HT Rio Prado disembarking on the 21 July 1919
