Served in the South African (Boer) war and WW1.
When he first enlisted in 1901 in the 1st QMI, A Coy, and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, it was noted he was single and from Allora, Qld. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, A Coy, Bk 1 p. 19, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mr. W. Burge, Saddler, Allora, who was his father.
in 1914 he again enlisted for WW1 and applied for a commission and was appointed as a Lieutenant. On his Application for a Commission Form, dated 17 Aug 1914, it is noted that; he was born at Allora on 1 Jul 1879; he was single with the trade of Auctioneers Clerk; he had suceesfully completed his Lieutenant examinations in 1912; his N.O.K. was his father William Burge, Allora; and he had previously served in South Africa with the 1st QMI. He was appointed Lieutenant with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment on 14 Aug 1914 and while serving at Gallipoli he was initially reported missing in action, later confirmed as killed in action on 7 Aug 1915.
Joseph Burge was born on 1 Jul 1879 at Allora, Qld, a son to William Burge and Mary Ann Burge (nee Lambley).
