Biography

Frank William Allert was born on 9 December 1895 in Adelaide, South Australia.

By profession, he was an ironworker when the war started. His enlistment records describe him as 5 foot 5 1/2 inches tall, weighing 115 pounds with grey eyes and chest measurements of 31 1/2 to 33 inches. Without any prior military experience, Allert Frank William enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F) as a private on the 11 of May 1915 at the age of 19. His mother Ellen was his nominated next of kin.

He embarked from Adelaide on the 23 of June 1915 aboard the HMAT A61 Kanowna. His service number was 1654, and he was assigned to the 27 Infantry Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement.

The 27th battalion was deployed to Gallipoli in September 1915. Where they served on the front lines until the evacuation of Allied forces in December 1915. Their role included holding defensive positions and participating in attacking the opponents.

Allert became ill with Jaundice from the 9th of December 1915 and he was evacuated for treatment ending up at the No 1 Auxiliary Hospital in Cario. By February he has recovered and returned to his unit for further training. He later moved to France on 1st June 1916. The 27th infantry battalion also participated in the battle of Pozieres (July- August 1916). On 16th August Allert was temporarily detached for duty with the 12th Ambulance and returned to his unit 20th August 1916. In 1917 he was detached to duty with the 14th Field Ambulance and was appointed Acting Corporal.

He was promoted to Acting Sergeant without pay on 8th July 1917 but was later demoted back to Private 25th October 1917

After facing the hardships of war for months on end, he returned to Australia on 28 March 1919. he was discharged 6th July 1919.

Allert passed away in 1982 and was laid to rest in Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia.
