Thomas Alfred JONSON (Johnson) was born on 4th November 1886 in Mulwala, NSW and his birth was registered in Corowa under the surname JONSON.  Tom was a Blacksmith and Ferrier by trade. According to his half sister Frances, prior to WW1 Tom worked as a drover between Victoria and Queensland.

He enlisted (as Johnson) in the Army on 15/5/1916 in Melbourne and served with the 8th Light Horse Regiment embarking on HMAT Hymettus from Melbourne on the 12/9/1916 for North Africa.   Tom saw action in Palestine, Jordan and Egypt.  He embarked for Australia on HT Malta on 8/7/1919 and was discharged on 21/9/1919.  Tom was awarded the Victory Medal 1914-1919 in 1923 and possibly 2 other medals.  His service record (#2944) describes him as 5’ 4¾” tall, fresh complexion, eyes brown, hair brown, religion Methodist.

Tom married Dorothy Armstrong, d/o Arch Armstrong & Joan Pinchbeck in 1923 in Numurkah.  Their only child, Bruce Thomas Johnson was born the following year in 1924 in Numurkah.  Birth notice in the Argus, page 13 on Saturday 5 July 1924:

JOHNSON (nee Dorothy Armstrong).— On the 29th June, at Madeline Street, Numurkah, to Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Johnson (late 8th Light Horse) - a son (Bruce Thomas).

On the 1936 Electoral Roll they were still living in Numurkah.  They eventually moved to the Melbourne area.  Dorothy died in 1954 and was cremated on 30/7/1954 at Fawkner Cemetery.  Thomas died in 1970 and his death was registered under the surname of JOHNSON in Footscray, Victoria
