Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell

I served and suffered during The Great War, now resting with my brother at Sandgate Cemetery.

65 years ago today, on the 17th April 1957, Private Robert Andrew Kelly, 4th Battalion (Reg No-7014), plumber (S.C. Coleman, Islington, N.S.W.), from Lawson Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 8 Ivy Street, Islington, N.S.W. (1930), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61, not 63. CATHOLIC 1-A Spec. 125.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 28th November 1895 to Michael Edward and Mary E Kelly (unsure if married), Robert enlisted October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 14.2.1917 (bronchitis, laryngitis).
Wounded in action - 4.10.1917 (GSW abdomen, severe). Invalided to England 12.10.1917.

Robert was invalided home February 1919, and was discharged medically unfit on the 13th March 1919.

Mr. Kelly’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Hamilton - St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll (photos, unveiled on the 9th March 1919, 160 names inscribed, located at St. Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton, N.S.W.).

Younger brother Frederick Edward (34th & 4th Battalions, Reg No-474, born 1892? died 1930) resting side by side with Robert - CATHOLIC 1-A Spec. 123.

I have placed poppies and 1914-1918 WAR labels in remembrance of these WW1 Heroes for their service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
