Son of Thomas Leach and Catherine Matthews formerly Leach of Taihape, NZ. Half brother to John James Matthews who was killed in action on 10 December 1916 while serving with the 24th Australian Field Artillery and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial
