Add my storyBiography contributed by Chris Buckley
One of three brothers (Thomas, Arnold and Albert) who served in WWI, Private Arnold Pickering enlisted in the AIF on 11 August 1915, and was attached to 58th Infantry Battalion on 4 April 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne on board HMAT A14 Eripides for service on the Western Front. Private Pickering was attached to 22nd Infantry Battalion when he was KiA at Pozieres in France on 27 July 1916 - there is no known grave.
On 12 September 1916 The Stawell News and Pleasant Creek Chronicle wrote 'Deceased was a young man of fine physique, and as an axeman he gained fame on account of the sterling performances he put up in the district, and was looked upon as the champion. He was only 20 years of age, but his achievements with the axe were first class, and he had won a number of handicap matches in addition to challenge matches.
Private Pickering was most unassuming in manner, and won the admiration of a wide circle of friends, who extend to his sorrowing relatives their sincere sympathies in their bereavement. Two brothers of deceased are now serving with the colours ...' (p.3).
Arnold was born at Fyan's Creek via Stawell, Victoria in 1896, fourth of eleven children of Joshua (Joss) Charles Pickering (b1858 in Stawell, Victoria) and his second wife Agnes Eliza Thompson (b1872 in Stawell, Victoria). Joss was a Widower with four children in 1889 when he and Agnes married in Stawell. The couple settled in the Stawell district (Fyan's Creek and Boroka) where they raised their family and Joss was a Farmer.
Arnold was a Labourer and champion Axeman/Wood Cutter in Stawell in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF.
