Son of John Underwood and Margaret Ellen Underwood nee Holland of Port Road, Woodville, SA.
3 April 1916 - enlisted at Adelaide with the 10th Battalion and with the rank of Private.
17 December 1916 - transferred to the 27th Battalion while in England.
5 May 1917 - wounded. Right shoulder, embarked HS Cambrai at Calais for England on 13 May 1919.
9 August 1918 - wounded, second occasion. Severe wound to the left leg including his knee.
Commenced return to Australia on 31 March 1919 aboard HT Khyber disembarking on 9 May 1919.
20 July 1919 - discharged at the 4th Military District s medically unfit due to wounding.
Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal
On 24 April 1926 William married Hilda Elizabeth Guppy in the Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide.
