"Constable William Hughes was a veteran Police officer with 9 years’ experience in Ireland before he joined the Queensland Police in April 1914. He was one of the four police officers, Bourke, Johnson and Mulvie, who all joined the 15th Battalion on 13 January 1915. Hughes embarked aboard HMAT Seang Bee A48 on 12 February 1915, he was 30 years old. Hughes was killed in fierce action at or near the Garrison of Quinn’s Post at Gallipoli on 3 May 1915 however, his body was not located nor marked at burial." - SOURCE (www.police.qld.gov.au)
