Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Joseph stated he was born in Glasgow, Scotland and gave his next of kin as his wife, Mrs. Dora Elizabeth Chapman, Perth, Western Australia.

On 30 May 1916, four days before it was relieved from front-line duty, the 11th Battalion came under a fierce German artillery bombardment. Two officers and 36 other ranks were killed in hours of an incessant hail of high explosive and shrapnel fire. Chapman was one of those killed and buried in the Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery.

His brother 285 Lce. Cpl. William McNab Chapman also of the 11th Battalion AIF, was killed in action on the 30 October 1917, aged 24.

Their parents were Joseph and Christina McNab Chapman of Barrhead, Scotland and both are remembered on the Barrhead War Memorial.
