John Thomas Hanks was the son of Samuel and Agnes Hanks of Boggabri, New South Wales.
His younger brother was killed only four months later, also in Belgium, 3085 Pte. Cecil James Hanks 34th Battalion AIF, killed in action 12 October 1917, aged 20.
John was an original of the 36th Battalion and arrived in France with the 3rd Division during November 1916. He was killed during the 3rd Division’s first big attack on the Western Front, at Messines, Belgium.
