James Stanley Forbes Bartlett was born on the 18th of November 1884 in Brisbane, in the Colony of Queensland, to Stephen and Hannah Bartlett. James married his fiancée Miss Catherine May Hillcoat on the 17th of June 1911 at St James Cathedral, Gladstone. Together they had a son Gordon born on the 24th of May 1914 who served in the Australian Air Force and Army during the Second World War. 

Served in Queensland Teachers' Corps (Adjutant, Senior Cadets, Northern Queensland, Townsville and Cairns).

In 1911 James was the assistant Inspector of Orphanages.

Sir. Stephen Bartlett, sen., Westward Ho, Morningside, has boen notified that hia son, Lieutenant .T. P. S. Bartlett, aged 32 years, was killed in action in France, on July 25, 1916. The deceased officer, who was the sixth son of a well known family, had considerable public service, having been in the Education Department from 1898 to 1900, at the Central  Boys' and East Brisbane Schools, in the Department of Justice as C.P.S., and in the State Orphanage Department at Townsville and Rockhampton. Qualifying in chemistry, he moved to Sydney, and joined Hallam's, Hunter-Street. He enlisted on January 2, 191G, and his experience as officer in cadets and general military work as adjutant and captain no doubt led to 'his early departure for the Front, he leaves a widow and one child resident at Sydney. Mr. Bartlett, maintained the reputation of his family for social activity, and is especially remembered for his active work in the inception of the now prosperous Anglican Church at Morningside.

Mr. O. E. J. .Bartlett, head teacher of Jones' Hill state school, has received word that his brother, Lieutenant J. S. F. Bartlett, has been killed in action in France, on 25th July. Lieut. Bartlett enlisted from Sydney, and prior to his enlistment was an inspector in the Queensland State Children's Department, and was stationed in Rockhampton. He was the sixth  son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Bartlett of 'Westward Ho.' Morningside, Brisbane, and was the third member of the family to offer his services for his country. He leaves a widow and young son to mourn his loss.
