Younger of the two brothers (William and Phillip) who served in WWI, Private Phillip John Smith (Service Nos:513/4494) initially enlisted in the AIF on 28 April 1915, and was attached to 24th Infantry Battalion on 8 May 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on board HMAT Euripides. Private Smith served at Gallipoli and Anzac, and was hospitalised with Enteric Fever and Influenze at Port Said before embarking from Suez for Melbourne on board HS Wandilla. Following three months leave, Private Smith 'Returned to Duty' (NAA) on 6 March 1916, and was re attested before embarking with 23rd Infantry Battalion on 23 April 1916 for Active Service Abroad (Tel-el-Kebir and France). On 17 October 1916, Private Smith embarked from Portland for Melbourne on board HS Wandilla, and was attached to 23rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 4 January 1917 (Medically Unfit).
Paddy was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1889, third of six children of William Thomas Smith Snr (b1860 in Indigo, Victoria) and Emma Vibert (b1863 in Beechworth, Victoria). William and Emma married in 1884 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and William was a Labourer until his death in 1916 - Emily died in 1897.
Paddy worked as a Labourer in Shepparton, where in 1915 he married Elsie May Gorman (b1895 in Wangaratta, Victoria) before enlisting in the AIF. Following his Discharge from the Army, Paddy and Elsie settled in Kyabram, where they raised their family and Paddy was an Orchardist/Farmer. In the early 1950s Paddy and Elsie moved to Bendigo, where Paddy worked as a Labourer until retirement. Following Elsie's death in 1970, Paddy moved to Mooroopna, where he died in 1977.
