Biography contributed by Vianca Datt

Arthur Dodd was born in the Tulloona station, New South Wales in the year of 1884.   His hometown was Elsmore, Inverell, New South Wales.  Arthur was a labourer by occupation.  The son of Thomas and Sarah Dodd he had a brother, Frederick, who also lived in Elsmore.  Their births were registered at Warialda NSW.  The school that Arthur attended was called the Knottyash School.

Before the war, Arthur had been working at the Little Elsmore tin fields.  Both Arthur and his brother enlisted at Inverell in October 1916 and were among the seven men who were given a send-off at Elsmore before going to camp.  They became members of the 13th Infantry Battalion, 23rd Reinforcement, leaving Australia in November on board HMAT A72 Beltana. After Gallipoli, the 13th battalion became part of the 4th Division and served on the Western Front in Belgium and France.  Arthur was sent to France in May 1917.  Just a month later, while acting as a rations carrier behind the front line, he was severely wounded during the Battle of Messines.  After initial treatment, he was transported to England and admitted to the Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich with a gunshot wound to his back and leg fractures.

The following year Arthur returned to Australia on board the Hospital Ship “Kanowna” and was admitted to the Randwick Hospital in Sydney where he underwent many operations.   Sadly, he died from his wounds in hospital on 27th of October 1919 and was buried at the Randwick Church of England Cemetery. He is listed on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour.  He is also listed on the Elsmore Honour Roll which was unveiled by his mother Sarah Dodd in 1918

Private Arthur Dodd’s name is recorded on the Inverell Memorial Olympic Pool World War I Honour Roll.  In 1919 he was one of the men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade, Inverell.
