Son of John Tanian and Annie Tanian nee Evans of 'Red Hill', Heathcote, Victoria.
Brother of Charles Bernard Tanian, Herbert Vincent Tanian, John David Tanian who returned to Australia on 31 August 1916 having served with the 7th Battalion, Ellen May Tanian, Albert Thomas Tanian, Annie Mavis Tanian, Maurice James Tanian and William Tanian who returned to Australia on 30 April 1919 having served with the 37th Battalion
